St. Columba's in the late 50s early 60s and before
the additional building
around the Quad was done.
Mick Mearns writes "I remember in the Spring of 1954 watching
Danny Cosgrove, from Warrington, climb out the third window from the left
on the top storey, lower his feet into the gutter and, lying flat against
slates, edge his way to the next window on the right, navigating a tricky
right angle en route where the roofs joined. My bed was at the first window, above the two angled drainpipes. Danny is famous for uttering the deathless phrase, upon emerging from Father Superior's office after the interviews following the Easter exams, " Last again, me Mum'll kill me". The window in the lefthand gable framed the Eildon Hills. Through it one could hear the whistles and snorts of the steam trains going to distant places such as Galashiels and Hawick!" |
