From A Childhood Spent At Broome Hall
A
delightful contribution from the family album
of Anne-Thérese Scott-Abbott, daughter of Mrs Anne
Scott who was Cook at Broome Hall in the sixities.
In 1963 the family moved to Broome Hall: Susanne was 16, Michael
was 13, Anne-Theresé was 10 and Jacqueline was 6.

Billingsley writes:
"I knew John Conlon as bursar at BW,
around 61-63, overseeing the new sewers and rec room (former cowshed)
installed by the brothers' building team from their Civil Defence
van. He it was who taught French with his glorious Armagh accent,
modified by 4 years in Ottawa. 'Shack Sillarrberler a la meme
valeurre'. Also, in connection with sewer installation, when watching
to see if it was working, and an offering sped by: 'Excitin' shytin'
glorrry'. He used to drive the Priory's 1947 Duple coach (Annabel)
to St John's & on to Charlotte St Market, where the traders would
give him cut price veg just to get him out of the way of everyone
else trying to do their shopping.
His brother was a Cistercian in Ireland, who pioneered the gathering
of methane from animal manure to heat the abbey.
I think John went to an NGO after some time in Africa. He had
gone from BW to BH, and once met a crowd of Priorians at Waterloo
and treated all to tea & buns in those pre-Burger King days."
