The White Sisters convent on The Green — date unknown, but it looks deserted.

I have many childhood memories of this place : Sister St Patrick, the Mother Superior ; the wide
gravel path that led to that front door ; the orchards at the back, where throughout the Summer
we would pick bags full of apples and pears ; and the fetes that were held in the grounds.

"Fr Arthur Prentice, doyen of the
English Province of the White Fathers,
celebrated his 90th birthday this week
at the Provincial House in London.
A convert at 21, he subsequently lived
at Barnet, where he was organist
for several years.

He joined the White Fathers in 1897
and was ordained in 1903. After a year
in Rome, where he was present at the
enthronement of St Pius X, he was
appointed to Uganda. He came home
in 1921 for the beatification of the
Uganda Martyrs and remained in teaching for 6 years,
returning to Uganda in 1927.

Still active, he says Mass every morning
at 7.30 am.
Birthday celebrations ?
Yes, a day out with his elder sister (she is 91)."

"Superior of Heston White Fathers and parish priest of Heston since December 1948, Fr Francis Walsh DD, DPh. has been made Catholic bishop of Aberdeen, it was learned this week.

Fr Walsh was born in Cirencester in 1901 and educated at Blairs College, Aberdeen. He was ordained in 1925 after studying at the Scots College and Gregorian University in Rome.

He joined the White fathers in 1929. Two years later he went to the Scottish borders to establish the White Fathers at Melrose and Newtown St Boswell.

Better known in Scotland than in England, he has a faint hint of Doric in his speech, although he has no Scottish blood. Scholarly, witty, unconventional, open-minded and open-handed, Fr Walsh is something of an authority on church music. He has published works on plainsong and philosophy for the layman.

He is expected back here from a short visit to his family in Scotland on July 16th, a few weeks before his installation as Bishop."
